This is basically a one-time book club on Jane’s birthday. The discussion will be moderated by two local government planners, Katie McKain of the City of Charleston Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability and Eric Pohlman, with the Town of Mount Pleasant.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Register for the event. (Click here.)
Step 2: Acquire the book “Death and Life of Great American Cities,” the seminal work by Jane Jacobs. (Pro tip: borrow a copy from the Design Division library! Just ask.)
Step 3: Read the book.
Step 4: Bring your book and insights to the Charleston Civic Design Center on May 4th at 9am.
Step 5: Discuss the book over coffee and donuts.
Weekend of Jane Jacobs
In order to elevate community dialogue on urban design issues in the city, the City of Charleston's Design Division is organizing four events over four days to celebrate the work and life of Jane Jacobs on her birthday weekend (Thursday May 3rd- Sunday May 6th). Partner organizations, civic leaders, community stakeholders and urbanists will assist in the planning, organizing and leading of the events in various ways. All events are located, or will begin/end, at the Charleston Civic Design Center, which is located at 85 Calhoun Street.
