Design Division Internship Position Openings

 

1.  ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN PRODUCTION

Academic Internship (Unpaid);  Fall Semester

Part-time; flexible schedule and start date

This position will serve as a studio production assistant in urban, architectural and graphic design. Applicants should possess a foundational knowledge of urban design principles and relevant site design and graphic production skills (involving, at a minimum, the use of Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, and hand drawing).

General duties include:

  • Contribute significantly as a member of the design team on a variety of projects
  • Basic site design ideation and graphic production, from concept to presentation
  • Public engagement; planning for and participation in workshops and charrettes
  • Site documentation, analysis and 3D modeling
  • Precedent, best practices and creative solutions research

 

2. DIGITAL URBAN MODELING 

Academic Internship (Unpaid);  Fall Semester

Part-time; flexible schedule and start date

This position will construct a well-organized digital model for the Charleston peninsula, including its bridges and terrain using Sketchup. The model will incorporate historic, existing, and proposed conditions and will be used as a base for urban design projects. Applicants must know Sketchup and be able to build and manage 3D data using various sources and methodologies. Attention to organization and detail is highly important.

General duties include:

  • Collect base data from various sources, including, but not limited to: site plans and elevations, existing digital models, surveys, GIS, LiDAR, photographs, and field measurements
  • Construct a well-organized digital model at a moderate level of detail
  • Reach out to architecture and other firms to acquire and collect already-constructed models

 

3. PLACEMAKING & MULTIMEDIA STUDIO ASSISTANT

Academic Internship (Unpaid); Fall Semester

Part-time; flexible schedule and start date

This general studio assistant position will primarily focus on the civic engagement aspects of the Charleston Civic Design Center. Such aspects involve:

  • Operating the physical gallery and “shopfront,” on Calhoun Street, including planning for, documenting and reporting back on civic design events, such as: civic design charrettes, workshops, lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, open houses, etc.
  • Developing and implementing citywide placemaking and tactical urbanism strategies
  • Managing social media and the Design Division website; developing print media
  • Assisting with the production of design exhibits, including printing, scanning, document layout, sourcing, research, and other supportive tasks

Strong photographic composition, social media skills, and general creativity are highly desired. The right person will take on the role of shopkeeper, curator, social media poster, recorder, operations assistant and idea contributor.
